Packaging Supplies Carbon Neutral Announcement

We’ve got some exciting news — we’re officially carbon neutral!

Packaging Supplies is now a certified carbon-neutral business, thanks to the help of professional environmental services experts, Carbon Jacked.

We take sustainability seriously, which is why Packaging Supplies has established an industry-leading position on carbon neutrality within the packaging industry. This means we’ll offset the carbon of your purchase to make the planet a better place for everyone.

What Does Carbon Neutral Mean?

Becoming “carbon neutral” means that any CO2 released into the atmosphere as a result of our company’s activities is balanced out by removing an equivalent amount from the atmosphere through climate-positive activities. The result is net-zero carbon emissions, creating a more sustainable future for our customers and the global population.

What about Carbon Neutral Products?

Technically, any business can become carbon neutral by offsetting Scope 1 and 2 emissions (discussed further below). Few take their supply chain into account, as the requirements for making their actual products carbon neutral are far more extensive than becoming a carbon neutral organisation.

We’ve gone a step further to make our operations as future-friendly as possible.

In addition to our certified carbon-neutral status, we’ve made all of our products carbon neutral too.

We factored in everything from the production of raw materials to the transportation and delivery of goods, taking a holistic view of our supply chain to make our operations leaner and greener than any other packaging supplier in the UK.

What Is a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)?

Every product has a carbon footprint, known as a “product carbon footprint” (PCF). This carbon footprint is calculated by assessing the carbon emissions generated as part of the manufacturing, usage and disposal of the product.

While some carbon emissions are unavoidable, the aim of creating carbon neutral packaging is to optimise and reduce the amount of carbon produced over the product’s life cycle, making it better for the environment.

To calculate a product carbon footprint for our plastic-free packaging, we analysed emissions associated with:

  • Primary and auxiliary materials used in production
  • Waste materials and byproducts
  • Energy used in manufacturing
  • Storage and distribution of products.

After completing a detailed assessment of our product lines, from postal boxes and shipping boxes to food packaging, we’ve accounted for carbon emissions across our entire business. As a result, we’ve managed to significantly lower our company’s greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the size of our carbon footprint by implementing sustainable practices.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

Becoming carbon neutral isn’t just good news for Packaging Supplies; it’s good news for you too. If you’re hoping to achieve carbon-neutral status, you won’t need to offset your upstream packaging emissions — we’ve already done it! All the individual products sold through our online shop are carbon neutral, making acquiring a carbon neutral certification quicker and easier.

Plus, our chosen courier, DPD, has taken a pledge to combat climate change. DPD has already offset some of their emissions and aims to be the greenest delivery company on the planet, giving you a completely eco-friendly experience when you shop with us.

How We Achieved Carbon Neutral Status

Our passion for sustainable practices started long before becoming the UK’s first plastic-free packaging supplier. As part of our commitment to protecting the environment, we teamed up with professional environmental services experts, Carbon Jacked. They conducted comprehensive carbon footprint assessments to measure, understand and report emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, the global framework for measuring the carbon footprint of businesses.

Under the GHG Protocol, companies are only responsible for their direct emissions. These are classed as Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, but we’ve gone a step further and broadened the scope of our carbon footprint assessment to include Scope 3 emissions (e.g. the indirect emissions from the supply chain). Taking on this extra accountability means we can give a more detailed and accurate assessment of our net environmental impact.

By rigorously measuring our carbon footprint, enacting initiatives to minimise it and becoming carbon neutral, we’ve made our business lean and green, giving you the most eco-friendly products and services possible.

We’re Making Positive Change with Sustainable Development

As part of our new carbon neutral status, we’re offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions by supporting the Musi River Hydro Project in Indonesia. The project not only combats climate change but also contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, creating jobs and building infrastructure for local communities, specifically SDGs 7, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 15.

The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over half a million tonnes annually and provide clean energy for the local community. In addition to the permanent jobs the project has created, it’s also funded an extensive reforestation programme to protect the natural landscape.

With more exciting sustainability-focused developments on the way, we’ll keep striving to be the most eco-friendly packaging supplier in the UK and beyond.
